Florida Vacations In Jacksonville

Situated in the northeastern portion of Florida, lies one of the
gems of the state and a popular vacation destination:

In Northeast Florida beaches stretch for more than 100 miles
along the Atlantic Coast. Some of the most popular beaches are
Amelia Island and Fernandina which consist of approximately 13

windsurfing, fishing and camping, Huguenot Memorial Park is a
great beach for these activities.

Here are just a few more of the many activities to be found in
Jacksonville:

St. Augustine. St. Augustine is the oldest city in America and
was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez. One of the main
attractions of St. Augustine is the old for that sits near the
bridge of the lions. This fort is centuries old and in great
condition. While walking through the stone corridors and gazing
the rooftop, which used to boast of powerful cannons used to
protect the fort, one can get a glimpse of history and almost
imagine what it was like to live at the fort during the height
of its glory.

Guana River State Park. This 2,000 acre preserve is a perfect
spot for your family to enjoy picnicking, biking, fishing and
hiking.

Anastasia State Recreation Area. This bird sanctuary consists of
1,700 acres of ancient oaks, five miles of beach, spectacular
sand dunes and tidal marshes which are a perfect backdrop for
camping, picnicking, hiking, boating, swimming, windsurfing and
fishing. Here you can learn to windsurf from the professionals
and take a canoe trip along the banks of Salt run.

Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. The Cummer museum features an
award-winning collection of classical art, traveling displays,
breathtaking riverside gardens and a children\'s learning center.

Downtown. Downtown Jacksonville boasts of the world-famous
Landing, an intricate web of shops and eateries where local
entertainment and special celebrations are held. Also downtown
you will find Alltel Stadium, home of the Jaguars; Veterans
Memorial Coliseum where many events such as circuses, concerts,
and monster truck shows are held; Wolfson park, home of the
Jacksonville Suns baseball team; and Met Park, an amphitheater
that plays home to many concerts. Jacksonville also hosts the
Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and Junior Orchestra. And at the
Florida Theatre you can see many Broadway plays as well as shows
from stars such as David Copperfield and the Nutcracker Ballet
during the Christmas season.

As you can see from these few examples, there is no chance that
you will get bored on your next vacation getaway if you choose
Jacksonville, Florida as your destination. From a round of golf
to lazing away on the beach or touring one of the many nature
preserves, the Jacksonville area has something to please even
the most finicky heart.

Manila Philippines

The Philippines has recently gained itself a bad reputation due to all the political on-goings in the country. Clashes between rebel forces and the government, rumors of coup, status of emergency declarations, and even suspected links to the al Quaeda - no wonder some Western governments cannot help but release travel advisories against visiting this country.



Before you decide against a trip to Manila, you should bear in mind that the newspapers do not always give an accurate picture of a situation. Sensationalism is their business, and sensationalized news is what you usually get.



Manila is located in the northern island of Luzon. The terrorist stronghold is located in the southernmost part of the Philippines - two big islands away - in Mindanao. The status of emergency was indeed declared but civilians basically continued to live their normal lives even as it was in place.



It is very easy to get around in Manila. The jeepney is the Philippines\' most common form of transportation. It is actually based on the US Army jeep but is longer and fits about 16-20 people. You can also get on buses, the Metro Rail Transit, and hire cabs. Language is not a major problem as even the people on the streets can speak rudimentary English.



Manila is well-known for its nightlife. You can find bars open until 3 or 4 in the morning. The Makati and Malate areas are where you can find the hottest clubs and bars. Makati is a bit more expensive but safer as well.



Malls abound in the metro. You can find anything from designer brands to nondescript but very cheap brands. Food is not a problem. Filipino food, American fast food, Japanese food - you can find anything there.



Filipinos are very hospitable by nature. You will be surprised at how friendly and helpful most of them are. It\'s actually a different form of racism - they seem to treat Caucasians in a much better way.



Cost of living and traveling is so much lower than in western countries. So if you have dollars or euros, chances are you will have no problems availing services that meet your standards. Hotels and other accommodations are abundant and easy to find.



If it is the beach you want, then you can opt to go out of the city. The nearest beach can be reached in about 4 hours from the city. You can take a plane to other parts of the country if you want to see more.



Whether you are traveling alone or with your family, Manila is a good place to visit. It will be a rich cultural experience for you.

A Tour Guide I'm Not!

When you are the author of five books and a host of columns and articles, something in the back of your brain speaks to you. \Just because you\'re published, don\'t get it into your head that people care a rat\'s fundament that you have had 45,000 people read your articles and columns, not to mention your books, and that someone, somewhere is even syndicating your material to the tune of 700 publications and counting.\

That would be the voice of reason talking.

I know this because one source I use to track my writing recently issued a report that people are actually reading what I write and doing so in great numbers. This does not mean that I am famous and most certainly does not mean that I am rich. But, what it does mean is that I am currently having to wade through a bevy of e-mails from readers who think because,

1. I live in Mexico.
2. Because I write about Mexico.
3. That 1 + 2 = I must be a tour guide, an interpreter or translator, an expatriate mentor, a hotel reservation-maker and confirmer, and that if they write and say, \Oh, tell me what I need to know to retire to Mexico,\ that I have nothing else to do with my time but try to come up with an explanation to the general question, \What\'s it like to live in Mexico?\

I am writing about this because, for real, I am getting not a few, but a lot, of readers who write me and ask me to do these things for them.

For those of you who do not know what I do, I live in Mexico with my beloved wife, Cynthia, and I write. I write books and I write articles and columns. I have had some modest success but not enough to say that I am well-known because I am most certainly not. Nor do I live in a mansion with an army of servants. We live in a one-bedroom apartment that my wife cleans herself.

People who do not know what is like to live in Mexico are understandably curious and want to know the skinny. That is why we wrote a book called, The Plain Truth about Living in Mexico. We wrote the book so that neither of us would have to repeat ourselves in answering untold e-mails which ask what has to be the most general question in the known universe, \What can you tell me about living in Mexico?\

Where would I possibly begin to answer this question for the scores who e-mail me? I wrote a few books that do just that.

I\'ve met American tourists that are checking out the possibility of living here. They ask me what I do all day with my time. Now, that is a good question. It is good because if you move here to retire or simply live, you will have to come up with something to do or you will find yourself making a hasty retreat back from whence you came.

However, when I tell people what I do all day, you would swear that I had just told them that I engage in methodical serial killing. One guy said to me once, \Oh, I could never do that!\ And another, \Oh, I would have to do something REAL with my time.\

Alrighty.

If you are wondering what it is I told them that garnered those responses it was this, \I sit in the park a lot.\ And, I really do thata lot!

I get most of the material I write about when I sit in one of the many parks in this Central Mexican town. Perhaps that gives the appearance that I have nothing better to do with my time. Maybe these tourists go back and report this to othersothers who write me with these assignments that they think I can do for them. Maybe they are thinking of my well-being. Since I am such a do-nothing schmuck, I must need some work.

I do not know. What do you think?

I am very grateful that people are reading my work. It makes me feel good and spurs me on to keep writing. I even had a travel book publishing company tell me that they will contact me later in the year to give me to write for them. They actually liked my writing enough to want to hire me. That is good.

But, for the record, dear readers, I do not interpret, translate, book hotels, pick you up at the airport, find you somewhere to live, run an Expatriation Mentoring Service, nor have the time to tell you how to move to Mexico or what it is like to live here.

Oxbow Summer School in this case deserves a special mention as this school was founded in 1910 and holds an iconic status. The institute has over 20 studios that attract reputed artists from across the world.



If you have a penchant for watching and exploring cultural activities, then you must make it a point to schedule your trip so you can be there for the Chamber Music Series (organized during July and August). If theater is what interests you, then the ideal time to visit Saugatuck is between June and September.

8:00am to nightfall. A nice touch is the addition of plasma tv
screens to watch sporting events while you play. The pool also

Wynn Las Vegas is built on the site of the old Desert Inn and
Steve Wynn worked with Tom Fazio to build a world class golf
course adjacent to the resort. The proximity of the course is a
huge advantage over most hotel/casinos in Las Vegas.
Unfortunately, green fees are pricey and the rumor is that Wynn
will tear down the golf course to build a new tower.
